Appointment -- Here the old man has seen death and he runs home through the streets of Baghdad. I've never been to Baghdad, but I've spent some time in India and parts of the story I modeled on cities there -- narrow streets of old old buildings with a maze of passages and arches.

Look at three pictures, use up arrow to go back to other books.

On this side of the picture is a beggar, a crutch in one hand, his other hand out. The old man he runs by the cripple not even noticing his plea for help.
Long ago I spent a summer in NYC and saw I saw beggars for the firt time. I saw them in India too. They can seem scary at first, but most people ignore them.

I wanted to make this picture look confusing on the side where the man is running-- there is no clear passge out at the far end, the shawods and light jump around -- like the old man feels.
