This illustrartion is from the book Angels in the Dust. The girl in the story has to take care of the house work and mind her little sister while her Dad is at work. She makes a mistake cooking on the wood stove and burns her house down! This is supposed to look scary -- still I think fire is exciting and it was a fun picture to make.

The idea for the picture came from a real fire. I love to watch fires. I used to live in a neighbohood of rundown houses. The house across the street was empty. One day the fire department announced they were coming to burn the house down for pratice. We got lawn chairs out and made a day of the event -- watching the firefighters work. I tried to show what it was like when the roof finally caved in.
