Here is the cover of the picture book Angels in the Dust. The story is set in the center of the Dustbowl in the 1930s. The main character and her little sister are riding the family mule down a dust drift on their farm.

Horses on the Ice -- Reunion

This drawing is my attempt to show something I never got to see. My grandparents told us before refrigerators everybody had ice boxes. Every winter horses went out on the ice and hauled wagons full of cut blocks to fill the ice houses on shore.

In the story Reunion Jon climbs into an old family photo and falls into the past where he meets Paul, his great grandfather as a boy. Half way thru the story the two boys get in a new Model T car, they are fooling around when it starts rolling down the hill....

Illustration from the picture book Angels in the Dust. The girl in the story burns her house down by mistake. Like many people I love to watch fires. I used to live in a neighbohood of rundown huses and one day the fire department came and burned down the house across the street for pratice. We got lawn chairs out and made a day of the event. I tried to show what it was like when the roof finally caved in.

In the picture book Reunion Jon looks at an old photo of a boy, and suddenly that boy is gone. He hears a voice say,"hide and seek you're it" and Jon decides to climb into the picture.
